Church in the Tetons Pastor Job Description

Church Overview

Church in the Tetons is a diverse, vibrant, growing gathering of people who seek to be a community of faith centered on worshiping and serving Jesus Christ. Our doors are open to all who long for connection with God and others. Launched in 2006 and chartered in 2016, CiT gathers for worship and Biblical study in the City Center building in the heart of Driggs. The primary vision is to be a spiritual home for believers and seekers from many backgrounds in a valley that is heavily Mormon and whose other Christian churches are mostly very theologically conservative. We serve a need in our community as a home for people who have come from a variety of traditionally protestant faith backgrounds who desire to pursue a meaningful relationship with Christ. As a small town in an isolated valley, there are not a plethora of Christian worshiping options. Our common ground is God’s grace and acceptance in Jesus Christ, a desire to grow closer to God through reading and understanding the Bible and living out the values of the Gospel in our world.  We are a multi-generational congregation that seeks to provide spiritual care and development for children, youth and adults through relational groups and gatherings. Church in the Tetons was planted with the vision to be a church with an outward focus toward the needs of the community. It has carried out this vision in a significant way through dedicating every fifth Sunday of the month as a “Service Sunday” in which the congregation spreads out to several hands-on projects around the valley. Our vision and hope is steadfast as we strive to be utilized by God in a mountain resort community. Church in the Tetons is a member of the Presbyterian Church USA.

Pastoral Responsibilities

Church in the Tetons seeks a full time pastor who will guide our congregation to a stronger commitment to God, and a desire to serve the community of Teton Valley and the world in an approachable and relevant way with the good news of Jesus Christ. To that end, our next pastor will be a spiritual leader who embodies those traits with a creative, courageous and compassionate ministry with both the congregation and the larger community. CiT is a dedicated, emerging church which is ready to respond to a pastors ability to develop and guide a growing ministry. This position is responsible for the pastoral care to all in need, including visitation of those unable to attend a regular service; preaching the word of God, following devoted time of study, preparation and prayer; serving as Session moderator; teaching, leading and assisting in the spiritual formation of the congregation, including new membersorientation and new elders and deacons training; administering the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lords Supper; officiating funerals and memorials; officiating weddings for the congregation and providing premarital counseling; directing, organizing and overseeing the programs and operations of the church organization; participating in the ministry of the Presbytery of Kendall, the PCUSA and other ecumenical relationships in the community.

Church Setting

Summer or winter, Teton Valley is a place of inspiring beauty and endless recreational opportunities embedded in a friendly, laid-back, small town atmosphere. Teton Valley is a hidden gem, but in the words of a Wall Street Journal article, “the secret is out.” The west side of the Teton mountain range, just 30 miles from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is still a western agricultural community at heart but is experiencing a transformation as a recreational destination due in part to its proximity to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and to world class skiing at Grand Targhee Resort. It is common in the winter to wear ski clothes to worship and in the summer to be ready to fly fish or ride mountain bikes. With about 10,000 full time residents in the valley, summer brings almost as many seasonal residents as winter to hike, paint, golf and gather in a local park on Thursday evening’s for the popular Music on Main. Ministry in a recreational, small town context is relational and casual with meaningful conversations taking place on the chairlift or while casting a line in the Teton River. Worship can be in the park or beside a sparkling river. Teton Valley is a community with 61 non-profits that actively care for all, and our church is a part of that.  The challenges of living and serving in Teton Valley are the need for affordable housing, preservation of wild lands, incorporating and planning for a growing and diverse population, and finding time to enjoy all God has provided in our community.
