About the Senior Pastor

A congregation with 156 years of continuous Christian ministry and witness, Lake Providence Missionary Baptist Church (LPMBC) provides vibrant worship and relevant ministries. Located just minutes from downtown Nashville, LPMBC strives to share the gospel of Jesus Christ through missionary work and discipleship. The Reverend H. Bruce Maxwell serves as the Pastor and after almost 50 years of dedicated service has announced his retirement.

LPMBC is seeking a new Pastor who will continue the rich legacy, grow the congregation both spiritually and numerically, and chart a path forward toward the future. This person will be guided by Jesus Christ and use the Vision, Mission, Core Values, and Beliefs of Lake Providence Missionary Baptist Church to bring sustainable change, relevant messages, and an environment that attracts and retains young families. The Pastor is the leader of all aspects of church life that center around discipleship, growing Christian knowledge, nurturing Christian maturity through preaching and teaching, and encouraging ministry service by being accessible and approachable.

The Senior Pastor’s responsibilities include:

  • Conduct or assign worship leadership for each Sunday Service.
  • Perform Senior Pastoral duties, including visiting the sick, comforting the bereaved, officiating funerals, performing baptisms, and counseling members through life events.
  • Create and implement leadership development for direct reports, Associate Ministers, Deacons, and Trustees that support LPMBC’s Vision, Mission, Core Values, and Beliefs.
  • Support, counsel, and prepare all new converts as candidates for baptism, connecting with their families and lay ministers.
  • Regularly assess the current needs of disciple members (new and maturing) to ensure we are providing relevant and helpful training and ministries.
  • In consultation with the Minister of Discipleship and Ministries, review, evaluate, and approve curriculum and materials for all discipleship and educational ministries. Support and sustain a vibrant and engaging series of Family Night Bible Study sessions for all ages. Support the Christian Education Committee.
  • Provide input and support of a budget for all ministries. Be available nights and weekends for ministry events.
  • Provide a leadership pipeline to grow the church in young families, and young adults and meet the ministry needs of an intergenerational church.
  • Provide inclusion leadership to grow membership while providing community partnerships and interaction in the surrounding community where LPMBC is located.
  • A strong commitment to Jesus Christ and the Christian church.
  • A reputation of integrity and trust.
  • Abide by the LPMBC By-Laws.
  • Abide by the LPMBC Articles of Faith.
  • Theologically grounded and culturally informed.
  • Possess a professional and personal commitment to Christian teaching, preaching, and principles.
  • Expected to relocate to Middle, TN.
  • Expected to become a Lake Providence Missionary Baptist Church member.
  • Evenings and weekend work will be required to meet the job duties.
  • Must be able to perform the essential elements of the job with reasonable accommodation.

What you bring

The following describes many of the characteristics of the ideal candidate for the Senior Pastor:

Education and experience

  • Master of Theology (M.Th.), required – from an accredited institution.
  • Master of Divinity (M.Div.), preferred – from an accredited institution.
  • Ordination Required
  • A minimum of three years of pastoral experience, with more than five years of pastoral experience, is preferred with a congregation of similar size or greater.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Competent and compassionate leader demonstrating knowledge and appreciation of the traditional Missionary Baptist church teachings.
  • Ability to lead and gain consensus when challenging the status quo.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and church family.
  • Maintain confidential information concerning personal matters.
  • Strong decision-making ability and attention to detail.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of computers and proficiency in software programs, including Microsoft Office applications: PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Excel, Teams
  • Experience with database systems and use of Internet and social media platforms.
  • Possess the gift of hospitality and tact.
  • Demonstrate a desire to aid the church members in being faithful stewards of the ministry.

Personal characteristics and qualifications

  • Strong commitment to family and individual discipleship as central to church growth and development.
  • Strong in Christian Education and biblical teaching, with an ability to engage and apply Scripture to daily life.
  • Commitment to developing ministerial staff and preparing future leaders from within the church (Acts 6:3).
  • Passionate about reaching diverse communities, including African American, White, and Spanish-speaking populations within a 4-6 mile radius.
  • Ability to cast a clear vision, build collaboration, and connect with all generations.
  • Prolific communicator, both in writing and speaking, with a focus on current events and life application.
  • Compassionate, with a genuine love for family, unity, and community, valuing each member of the congregation.
