Senior Pastor
The pastor is the spiritual leader of the church. He shall serve as the chief under-shepherd and
overseer of the First Baptist Church of Shelby: feeding, leading, nurturing and protecting the
flock. His main responsibilities will be to communicate God’s Word, minister to the spiritual
needs of the flock, provide biblical leadership for the church, and provide supervisory and
administrative leadership in all areas of congregational care.
Minimum Training and Experience:
Completion of a postgraduate degree (Master’s Degree) from a seminary is ideal but not
mandatory. A Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis on Biblical Studies is preferred.
In lieu of formal academic training, experience will be considered in its place (please put in
detail on your resume).
Special Requirements:
1. Called to the pastoral ministry by and from the Holy Spirit of God and recognized by this local
body (Eph. 4: 11-13)
2. A clearly demonstrated Spiritual Gifting by the Holy Spirit to preach, teach and pastor the
flock (Eph. 4:11)
3. Licensed by the state to perform weddings
4. Spiritual and personal integrity and maturity (1 Tim. 3:6-7)
5. Ability and willingness to share Christ and disciple others (Matt. 28: 19-20)
6. Ability to relate to others with kindness and humility (Col. 3:12)
7. Demonstrated ability to exhort, admonish and encourage the flock of God (2 Tim. 4:2)
8. Ability to communicate well through a pulpit ministry (Titus 1:9)
9. Proven love for the fellowship of the church (John 13: 35)
10. Ability to empathize with the deep concerns of the congregation (Romans 12:15)
11. Manage his money with integrity so as not to bring reproach upon the church (1 Tim. 3:4)
Duties-Responsibilities:
1. Plan and conduct worship services: prepare and proclaim the Word of God in a regular pulpit
ministry and lead observances of the two biblically affirmed ordinances (Lord’s Supper and
Believer’s Baptism) which are also in accordance with the church by-laws
2. Motivate, equip and nurture the people of the church through example, preaching and
teaching God’s Word and spiritual counseling
3. Facilitate the contact/visitation of hospitalized or grieving church members
4. Officiate at weddings, baptisms, baby dedications, and funerals
5. Conduct counseling sessions with regular attenders of the church, as requested
6. Oversee church discipline and manage conflicts in the church along with the Deacons
7. Seek to reconcile relationships and promote unity within the church
8. Initiate and participate in evangelism efforts through various outreach activities
9. Oversee and provide direction for various church programs
10. Moderate all business meetings of the church along with the Deacons
11. Work with various standing and special committees (i.e., Deacon, Deaconess, and/or Trustee
Boards) in accomplishing their respective duties
12. Cooperate with local, state, and denominational leaders in matters of mutual interest and
concern; keep the church informed of denominational developments; represent the church in
denominational and civic matters
13. Serve as administrator of the church (along with the Deacons and others in elected positions
within the church)
14. Maintain church office hours for the benefit of all church members/non-members and the
related business of the church
15. Accountable to the Deacons and congregation in fulfilling the pastoral duties
