GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB FUNCTION:

The Director of Information Technology is accountable for the strategy and operational success of the Information Technology function, and will oversee the design, implementation, maintenance, performance, security, availability and recoverability of the company’s information systems. The Director of Information Technology maintains the necessary infrastructure by ensuring the stable and secure operation and support of the Seminary core computer systems, telecommunication services, network infrastructure, intranet, and related software and hardware systems. The Director of Information Technology drives improvement and maximizes productivity through the efficient use of staff and technology and identifies and anticipates future information system needs, and technology solutions based on changing strategic directions.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains organization wide effectiveness and efficiency by defining, delivering and supporting strategic plans for implementing information technologies.
  2. Directs technological research and development by studying and recommending organization goals, strategies, practices, and business needs of a variety of departments and users.
  3. Oversees and ensures effective and efficient operation of IT infrastructure, telecom system, classroom technology, and large database software systems such as the student information system (SIS) and customer relationship management (CRM) system, as well as third party technology implementations and outsourced services.
  4. Communicates with departments and individual users to identify needs and evaluate alternative technical solutions and strategies, as well as negotiates project scopes and deadlines.
  5. Coordinates and collaborates with Educational Technology department regarding classroom technology and support of online learning technology needs.
  6. Ensures completion of projects by coordinating resources and timetables with user departments and data center.
  7. Verifies application results by conducting system audits of technologies implemented.
  8. Preserves assets by ensuring the creation and implementation of disaster recovery protocols, back-up/recovery procedures and information security/control structures.
  9. Accomplishes financial objectives within budget parameters by forecasting requirements, preparing budgets, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances and initiating corrective action.
  10. Ensures the fast, efficient and effective delivery of technical support to customers.
  11. Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards.
  12. Stewards IT staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees; maintains a safe and secure work environment.
  13. Accomplishes excellent information technology results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures.
  14. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science, business administration, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience leading a team and managing major technology projects required.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Broad experience and knowledge of information technology functions and systems as well as knowledge of technologies specific to higher education.
  • Advanced analysis, problem solving, project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability and desire to champion change and manage the effective implementation of new ideas.
  • Ability to understand many different business needs/processes and assist departments in choosing special purpose hardware and software implementations in alignment with organizational IT strategies and coordination.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to recruit, train, lead, mentor and develop IT staff and optimize output of a team of technology professionals. Ability to interpret and apply complex technical information.
  • Sufficient knowledge of IT operations and the wide array of activities necessary to provide efficient systems and applications while providing excellent customer service: maintain, support and administer servers, network equipment, and related equipment; functional business software administration; network design; security best practices; databases and programming languages.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical personnel and negotiate adequate solutions.
  • Leadership, team building, mentoring skills.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Normal office working conditions including computer usage may require occasional standing, walking, long periods of sitting, climb stairs, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
