Scope of Position:

The Director of Faith Formation is responsible for (1) coordinating leaders and occasionally teaching children’s Sunday School and Adult Faith Formation, and (2) developing a culture of community service and facilitating related events.

The position is intended to be split into the two parts outlined above in equal amounts: knowledge-based faith formation, and service-oriented faith formation.

The Director of Faith Formation will also regularly attend, participate, and lead Sunday morning worship and attend fellowship, as this is the main gathering of the community of faith.

This position works closely with the Pastor, Office Administrator, and some congregational team leads to engage in this work. This position reports to and is supervised by the Pastor.

Specific Tasks Include:

Coordinate Knowledge-Based Faith Formation Opportunities, including organize Sunday School volunteers, assist Faith Formation Ministry in choosing and implementing the curriculum, lead Sunday School classes as needed, work with the pastor to organize Communion classes, educate and empower children/youth to participate in worship weekly and for special occasions, and occasionally lead Adult Faith Formation opportunities. This also includes supporting the Confirmation Ministry, including working with the pastor to develop/select curriculum for classes and assisting in leading classes and/or selecting other adults to assist.

Coordinate Service-Oriented Faith Formation Opportunities, including connecting with community organizations to organize every-other-month service projects, working with community leaders to facilitate Day Camp (VBS), develop deeper relationships with our partner organizations (currently Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp, Excellence in Leadership, FISH, Lutheran Family Services), and work with the pastor to develop leaders for worship and assist in leading worship.

Other duties as assigned.

Experience and Education:

Experience working in a community-oriented or faith-based organization. Experience planning, delegating, leading, and reflecting on activities. Ability to work with all ages and with volunteers.

High school diploma required; Bachelor’s degree and/or subsequent education is preferred. Knowledge of Christian theology required; understanding of Lutheran theology is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

Starting at $25 per hour

Paid time off, per church policy

Flexible schedule, including working from home

General Hours:

  • 20 hours per week

  • Sunday mornings 8:30-11:30am

  • Tuesday afternoon and/or Thursday morning to connect with staff

  • Other times, including Saturdays and evenings, may be needed for knowledge-based or service-oriented faith formation activities.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships among diverse personalities and interests and to work cooperatively

  • Ability to plan events and think from the perspectives of multiple intelligences, learning styles, and ability levels

  • Imagine, organize, lead, and reflect on service activities in the community

  • Ability to work with volunteers of different levels of interest and commitment

  • Plan, facilitate, delegate, lead, and reflect on knowledge-based faith formation activities

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office

  • Ability to plan seasonally (such as Fall Faith Formation all at once) and to adapt to changing circumstances

  • Ability to create a welcoming and invitational atmosphere that reflects the Nativity community

  • Willingness to give and receive feedback
