The primary objective is to move people toward self-sufficiency by helping change the circumstances and life patterns that have held them captive to poverty and addictions. Position Title – Development and Communications Associate

Position Details

Supervisor: Chief Development Officer, working in conjunction with Communications Director

  • Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Salary: $53,495 – $76,081 (with opportunity to raise additional support)

Position Purpose

This hybrid role combines relationship-building with small to medium-dollar donors, story collection from the community, and the production of compelling marketing and fundraising materials. The ideal candidate thrives at the intersection of data-driven fundraising and authentic human connection, supporting the organization’s fundraising and outreach efforts by creating compelling marketing materials, managing digital channels, and strengthening donor relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Donor Fundraising & Relations (40%)

  • Develop and execute strategies to grow the base of recurring and one-time individual donors
  • Cultivate relationships with and oversee donors who are part of the monthly giving club.
  • Track and analyze donor metrics (retention rates, average gift, lifetime value)
  • Work with the Development Team to plan, promote, and execute fundraising events (5K Run, Annual Gala, Golf Tournament, Ministry Fair, and other special gatherings)
  • Ensure donor data is accurately maintained in the CRM system
  • Draft thank-you notes, make acknowledgment calls, and ensure timely donor appreciation

Story Collection & Community Engagement (30%)

  • Work in close relationship with Communications Director
  • Conduct interviews with program participants, volunteers, and donors to gather impact stories
  • Maintain a library of stories organized by program area, audience, and campaign type
  • Collaborate with program staff to identify story opportunities and follow-up on outcomes
  • Capture and curate shareable multimedia content (photography, video, quotes, stories) for use across communications channels

Marketing & Fundraising Materials Production (30%)

  • Write, design, and schedule weekly email blasts and targeted email marketing initiatives
  • Write and edit fundraising copy for emails, landing pages, mailers, and social media
  • Design excellent graphics and layouts using tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Collaborate with the Communications Director to develop, order, and assemble large-scale mailing campaigns (approximately three per year)
  • Publish engaging posts on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn five times per week

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Design Proficiency: Experience with graphic design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar) for both print and digital media
  • Digital Marketing: Strong background in email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact) and social-media scheduling tools
  • Content Production: Ability to capture high-quality photos/video and craft compelling storytelling content
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent multitasking, time-management, and attention to detail; ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Communication: Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable drafting donor correspondence and public-facing copy
  • Team Collaboration: Proven ability to work closely with directors, staff, volunteers, and external partners
  • Technical Aptitude: Comfortable using donor databases, CRM systems, and standard office software (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office)

Preferred Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Nonprofit Management, or related field
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices and donor stewardship
  • Demonstrated creativity, with the ability to generate fresh ideas and carry them through from concept to completion
  • Passion for serving in a Christ-centered, urban ministry context

Required Meeting Attendance

  • Church Attendance: Attend Open Door Fellowship (ODF) or Westside Church Internacional (WCI) service 24 times in the first year as staff
  • Open Door Ministries staff meetings (one meeting per month)
  • Open Door Ministries staff trainings (as needed)
  • Development staff meetings (one meeting per week)

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Work environment is both indoor and outdoor. Outdoor activities can be in extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, or high temperatures
