Position Summary
The Worship Director’s primary role is to creatively lead the congregation in corporate worship gatherings. Additionally this role will oversee the discipleship and programming for young adults (ages 18-25), ensuring alignment with the church’s vision and mission. The Director is expected to disciple and lead people through various worship elements (song, prayer, scripture readings) and through strategic young adult engagement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following tasks and time commitments (Approx. 40 hrs/week total):
A. Corporate Worship & Administration (Approx. 15 hrs/week)
- Worship Execution: Execute Sunday morning corporate worship gatherings with excellence and passion (scheduled for 48 weeks per year, including “Development Sundays”).
- Planning: In collaboration with the Lead Pastor, plan song selection and musical arrangements for each corporate worship gathering.
- Team Management: Audition, organize, schedule, train, and lead the musicians and technical staff.
- Administrative Support: Work with the Executive Assistant to complete necessary ministry administration.
B. Worship Program & Leader Development (Approx. 4 hr/week)
- Musician Discipleship: Develop and disciple musicians for various support roles.
- Leadership Mentoring: Use “Development Sundays” for mentoring and discipling music leaders for current and future congregations. This should run about 6 times per year.
- Rehearsal: Practice with key band members a minimum of once per month outside of Sunday mornings. This is an opportunity for team skill and song development.
C. Team Collaboration & General Discipleship (Approx. 6 hrs/week)
- Service Planning: Meet with the preaching pastor weekly to collaborate on Sunday services (approx. 30 minutes per week).
- Staff Meetings: Attend staff meetings twice per month (typically on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday).
- Long-Range Planning: Meet quarterly with the Lead Pastor to schedule worship and preaching themes three months in advance.
- Facilities Input: Collaborate with Facilities staff to provide input on the updating and maintenance of the sound system and music gear.
- Discipleship Group: Attend a Bridge Church weekly discipleship group for 1 year and then subsequently co-lead a discipleship group. (approx. 2 hour per week).
D. Young Adults (YA) Ministry & Discipleship (Approx. 15 hrs/week)
- Direct Discipleship & Contact Work: Initiate and maintain intentional one-on-one contact work with all young adults in the congregation. (ages 18-25).
- Adult Ministry Integration: Actively facilitate and encourage all young adult participants (ages 18-25) to become active members in an adult discipleship group.
- Event Planning & Execution: Plan and execute a total of six age-appropriate “fun” social events annually, catering to different age segments within the 18-25 range.
- Retreat Coordination: Plan and execute an annual YA retreat for 18-25 year olds.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
Spiritual & Character
- Express a genuine love for Christ and His people through leading corporate worship and life example.
- Can articulate God’s grace and work through song and speaking when appropriate during services.
- Understands, appreciates, and enacts a worship philosophy similar to Ancient-Future Worship.
- Is willing to grow and develop in musical skill and theological application.
Musical & Technical Skills
- 5+ years of experience leading corporate worship.
- Can read music and play one or more instruments.
- Can sing with appropriate tune and pitch.
- Appreciates and introduces a wide variety of musical expressions through instrumentation and song.
- Can effectively ‘blend’ a variety of worship styles.
- Values congregational singing and involvement, selecting appropriate volume levels for the band.
Leadership & Ministry Development
- Demonstrates the ability to lead and develop an entire worship band.
- Can shepherd and disciple members of the band.
- Provides a ‘youthful’ feel to worship, helping to bridge the generational gap between older and younger generations.
- Can be a team player and integrate well with other pastoral staff.
- Has the ability to grow the church’s music ministry in a variety of ways by engaging the church body and the community at large.
- Can network with other church leaders and combine best practices for application in the church’s context.
