Good Shepherd, a vibrant congregation in Centennial, is seeking a Youth Pastor. The successful candidate will work to grow the youth ministry program, embodying the values of Good Shepherd: fostering an environment that is supportive, accepting, inclusive, and open.  The successful candidate will build relationships with the youth, the congregation, and the Episcopal Church in Colorado, and will work to broaden the experiences of the youth beyond our suburban location, providing opportunities for the youth to live out their baptismal covenant within the larger community.  This is a year-round position, with an expectation of an 8-hour work week. Salary range—dependent on education and experience— is approximately $25.00 per hour to start. (To learn more about Good Shepherd, visit gshep.org)

 

Tasks and Responsibilities 

Initially

  • Attend Good Shepherd on Sunday mornings (at the time of the main service).
  • Provide a “Sunday School” experience for middle- and high-school-aged youth.
  • (If necessary, and if possible, be the “second adult” in lower-level Sunday school.)
  • Interact directly, and maintain contact, with youth and contribute to their spiritual growth and development.
  • Greet newcomer youth and contact them as soon as possible.
  • Create and encourage a welcome, inclusive, and caring atmosphere for everyone from the church and community.
  • Have a consistent presence in the lives of the youth at schools, sporting activities, and other events as much as possible.

As things grow

  • Plan, organize, and oversee youth group programming to ensure a balance of development in spirit, mind, body, character, and fun.
  • Develop, lead, and oversee fun yet challenging weekly activities.
  • Work with others to develop a Sunday School presence
  • Work with a committee of adults to assist with volunteering, planning, and coordinating.
  • Foster a team spirit with other church staff, the Vestry, and parents as applicable.
  • Partner with clergy, staff, and youth in coordinating 5th Sunday Family services

As things grow further

  • Plan and lead special events around special holidays such as Christmas and Easter.
  • Attend Fall and Spring diocesan youth events, as appropriate
    • Recruit chaperones
    • Fundraise, if necessary
    • Coordinate travel
    • (Compensation for such events to be agreed upon in advance)
  • Plan, lead, and oversee summer service trips, as appropriate
    • Attend monthly planning meetings
    • Attend two week-long trips in the summer, if appropriate

Administrative 

  • Meet regularly with the Rector
  • Attend weekly staff meetings (if possible)
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive roster of youth, schools, parents/guardians and current contact information.
  • Coordinate with the Parish Administrator and Communications Director as needed for ongoing communication needs.
  • Coordinate with the Children’s Ministry Director.

  • Send weekly/monthly communication to parents and youth, as appropriate,
  • Use appropriate communication tools (texts, social media, website) to maintain contact
  • Adhere to operational and financial policies, procedures, and practices; operate programs within acceptable budget parameters.
  • Pass the diocesan “Safeguarding God’s Children” training and adhere to diocesan safety guidelines to ensure safe practices in all youth activities.

 

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • Youth and young adult ministry experience.
  • Outstanding people skills.
  • Strong leadership and staff development skills.
  • Demonstrated giftedness in youth and young adult relations.
  • Ability to teach scripture/biblical concepts within an age-appropriate setting.
  • Understand (or be willing to learn), the theology and practices of the Episcopal Church (as they might pertain to Youth Ministry)
  • Skills in developing and implementing ministry strategies for the personal growth and development of young people.
  • Strong organizational ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and activities while meeting deadlines.
  • Personal initiative; creativity; and innovative thinking.
  • Wisdom to know how and when to set boundaries to protect individuals and the integrity of programs and Good Shepherd
